The Future of Farming in Flathead County
The Montana Land Reliance is hosting a free community forum on October 11 at the Flathead County Fairgrounds to explore the future viability of farming in the Flathead Valley. During the last 25 years, the Flathead Valley has experienced an unprecedented rate of subdivision and development, often on some of the richest farm land in the state. This has left many to question the future of farming in the Flathead Valley.
The forum will examine factors critical to the continued viability of farming, including the need to maintain productive farm land, the need for farming to be economically viable, and the need for young farmers. Speakers include Mark Lalum, Manager, Cenex Harvest States; Dr. Jeff Jacobsen, Dean, Montana State University College of Agriculture; Ron de Yong, Director, Montana Department of Agriculture, and Mark Schiltz, Western Manager, Montana Land Reliance. A lunch of locally grown food will be provided. For information contact Mark Schiltz at 837-2178.
